What is Legacy Authentication/Basic Authentication?
Basic authentication is normally when a username and a password is used to access your accounts/apps. When you have those 2 criteria correct then you meet all criteria and get access. The problem with this is that people tend to reuse passwords overall accounts, or these passwords are easily hackable/cracked using software.
Modern Authentication
Modern authentication is a web-based sign-in which supports rich multi-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security mechanism in which individuals are authenticated through more than one required security and validation procedure. Modern Authentication and MFA offers more secure user authentication and authorization. MFA is built from a combination of physical, logical, and biometric validation techniques used to secure a facility, product, or service.
– Something you know, typically a password.
– Something you have, such as a trusted device that is not easily duplicated, like a phone or hardware key.
– Something you are, biometrics like a fingerprint or face scan.
What we can do for you
Microsoft has announced that they intend to move their customers away from Basic Authentication as they strongly believe improving security in Exchange Online benefits all of us. They have still to announce a more accurate timeline for disabling Basic Authentication for tenants with usage, this could be as soon as October 2020, but it will eventually be disabled by Microsoft.
We can identify what is currently using legacy protocols and switch it off for you while making sure modern authentication is up and running smoothly. If you would like us to help you keep your environment safe then contact us now:
